Posted by WonderWoman in : Eat & Drink , 7 commentsFish and chips is getting a little tired I reckon. How about Pizza on the north side of town? I like Frankie’s (Ascot Vale) but Carosello’s (Essendon) is good too. Of course Meine Liebe (spelling? Northcote) is special.
I’ve actually never been to a La Porchetta restaurant - are they pretty good? Any other perfect pizza offerings, you think?
Pepper Cafe - sweet as pie, which is usually not on the menu

A curious sign is painted on the glass above the door to Pepper: Girdwood’s Hygienic Library.
Apparently, so Pepper stalwart Henry tells me, the books used to be hygienically cleaned - fumigated - after each use… all of which has nothing, really, to do with this friendly little cafe serving the Flemington, Kensington and Ascot Vale locals - and others.
There are quite a number of cafes in the area but Henry’s friendly approach has made this one very popular. I know locals bypass other cafes to get to Pepper.
Just cause the service is good, it does not mean that the food and coffee aren’t great.
There is even a Belgian white hot chocolate that could almost be considered a meal in itself. But the breakfasts are fab, too.
A recent newspaper review of the place said the customers were largely in their 20s. I find this strange. Every time I have been there, a range of ages is in attendance.
It’s terrific. Try it.

Best fish and chips in Melbourne
Posted by WonderWoman in : Eat & Drink , 7 comments‘Tis Friday night and thoughts turn to fish … and chips.
Our local is serviceable but I’d love ot hear Nooksters’ recommendations. Prefer north-west fish and chips but hey, if they’re really good, they’ll be worth the drive.
Low-fat salads
Posted by WonderWoman in : Eat & Drink , 4 commentsI’d love to hear from Nooksters about their fave salad recipes. It’s so easy to stay on the iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber, mushroom and avocado treadmill. I know I could look in recipe books but the best recipes are those tried and tested and cooked often by home cooks. That’s what i reckon, anyway!
