Miss Potter: a review, of sorts
Posted by WonderWoman in : Entertainment , trackbackSeven reasons for seeing Miss Potter:
(1) To enjoy Renee Zellweger in yet another British role
(2) To appreciate the inspired animation of Beatrice’s drawn “friends”
(3) To soar with the younger Warne, who achieves success as a publisher thereby
proving wrong his doubting brothers
(4) To delight in Beatrix’s triumph over an avaricious developer
(5) To admire the early 20th century costumes and styles of London
(6) To take in the stunning Lakes District scenery
(7) Finally, because it’s an uplifting, intelligent adult movie.

Thanks for your review
I am hoping to see this this weekend, a shame that the cinemas 5 minutes from me have finished screening it…
I must say that I always enjoyed watching the old Beatrix Potter series which my grandmother had kindly taped for me. However, I don’t really think that I would see that movie in a pink fit. I suppose I would probably agree with all the points mentioned above, except the first. I really do think that it was a terrible mistake to put Renee Zellweger into the role of Beatrix Potter. Surely a more suitable actress could have been found?
By all means, go and watch the movie. Enjoy it if you will. But I will hold to my opinion.
When I went to see “The Queen” a preview of “Miss Potter” was shown. A very proper, very English, elderly lady, who was seated next to me, leaned across and said ” My mother lived next door to Beatrix Potter”.
I enthused “Oh how lovely!”
The Lady then added “she was a very anti-social, sour sort of person and nobody liked her. Nothing like they’ve shown her to be in that film.”
“Ah, no.” I agreed “but I do love her books.”
“Oh yes her books are marvellous. May I try some of your popcorn, I have always wondered what it tastes like?”
“By all means” I said offering the popcorn “take a handfull”
“No, no one piece is quite enough, you are very kind”
Now as ridiculous as it might sound this conversation with a complete stranger is the reason why I won’t go to see this film. I love Emily Watson and Ewen McGregor, but even so. I realise that to get Americans to see a film there has to be an American star and Rene is one of the stock “I can do a British accent” american actors but I do feel it diminishes the credibility of a film like this.
Oh well - maybe I’ll do the DVD
People do have the strangest ideas and reasons for not wanting to see a particular movie. I agree with all seven reasons that Wonderwoman related for seeing the beautifully photographed and intelligently scripted Miss Potter. I saw it at the weekend and couldn’t have been more impressed.
