Posted by WonderWoman in : Shopping , trackback

When, exactly, can one be classed as a shopping addict? And is there help available? i sometimes feel compelled to go in to shops; is that a symptom? Any Nook psychiatrists are welcome to respond. Psychologists? Psychotherapists? Sales assistants?

I study psychology! I can help. Tell me about your childhood…

Hehe, kidding.

One can be addicted to many things, pretty much anything they enjoy. But just because you want to do things that you enjoy, it doesn’t mean you’re addicted. And shopping, like eating, is one of those things that everyone has to do at some stage, and only becomes a problem if you buy heaps more than you need.

I too love shopping, but try to only buy things I really want or need, apart from the occasional wonderful bargain here and there. I consider each purchase carefully, and turn down many items I’m not sure about, so that when I do purchase something, I feel lucky and clever, rather than feeling like a reckless spend-a-holic.

Still, sometimes there’s nothing much I need and I want to go shopping, so I go and just look at things. Many an afternoon I’ve spent staring, enchanted, at the toy aisle of K-mart, simply because I love to look at all the beautifully packaged items that yes, I like, but no, I’d never actually buy.

So there’s nothing wrong with looking in shops! It’s great fun, and I heartily encourage everyone to do it. And as long as it’s not a strain financially, it’s cool to buy the stuff you look at. As long as you’re not buying too many things that you are never going to use (although let’s face it, everyone does that sometimes!), then all is fine and you’re a perfectly functioning member of the female race.

Good luck and keep shopping! :D
