Best fish and chips in Melbourne
Posted by WonderWoman in : Eat & Drink , trackback‘Tis Friday night and thoughts turn to fish … and chips.
Our local is serviceable but I’d love ot hear Nooksters’ recommendations. Prefer north-west fish and chips but hey, if they’re really good, they’ll be worth the drive.

Good fish, great calamari, lousy chips from near Strathmore station in Woodland St. Good fish, great chips, great burgers, lousy calamari from Napier St Strathmore (southern one). Can’t get good potato cakes anywhere.
Haven’t been for a while but opposite the shops near windy hill Essendon was always good but too salty and the fish a bit thin. Meant to be a good one recently taken over in Mt Alexander Rd near Bulla Rd opposite side to the Grand, haven’t tried it yet. maybe tomorrow !
Clarendon St fish and chips in South Melbourne are top quality but a little too clinical for me, bit like Queenscliffe fish and chips. I like ‘em a traditional, not ultra clean restaurant style.
Something different - Lord of the Fries cnr Flinders & Elizabeth St - coronary waiting to happen.
Don’t forget to rip holes in the paper for the journey home ! Don’t want soggy chips.
Report back, I haven’t found a perfect one yet either.
Years ago the best chippies were from Keilor Village from a take-away shop that did fish and chips. I’ve had nothing like them since. Double cooked, of course, in proper, clean, fish’n'chip oil (Linseed , yes Linseed)
extract about fat:
Fat consumption should never be cut out entirely, even though that is very hard to do in our society. Two fats are considered essential because the body cannot manufacture them -linoleic acid and linolenic acid. The best vegetable sources of these essential fats are flax or linseed oil. These are needed for healthy cell membranes, nerves and arteries. They keep your skin smooth and lubricated, protect your joints and assist in the breakdown of cholesterol. They also help absorb the fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K. These essential fats are found in vegetables such as corn, soybean, safflower, walnut oils, also in nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables. Cold water fish are also high in these essential fats.

You know, I’m getting sick of posting and finding it not there the next time I log in. Don’t think no one is replying to your posts, I am, just nothing sticks ! Maybe it’s still on the way ?
Without doubt I would say the upmarket place in Martin St, Brighton just near the train station. Trust me on this.
Rex Hunt”s. I need to keep my skin smooth and lubricated
A new “British Style” fish and chip shop/cafe in Dandenong, run by an ex Yorkshireman ! Haggis/black pudding and chips, lovely fresh fillets of Gummi, blue eye and flathead ( the real stuff) mushy peas, Yorkshire fish cakes, real pork pies, chip butties etc. It’s all very British, even HP sauce and malt vinegar on the tables. It’s clean and simple, with no pretence to be anything other than the old style British caf’. The chips are yummy, hand made at the shop, non of this frozen rubbish. The beer batter is thin and crispy, cooked the Yorkshire way.
The British Style fish and chip shop is at 30 Stud Road, Dandenong.
Their phone number is 9794 6451, forgot to mention that.
